Prescribing Information
Finasteride is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor that may be prescribed when clinically appropriate for male pattern hair loss, benign prostatic hyperplasia, or other provider-determined uses.
Black Box Warning
Finasteride does not have a boxed warning. However, it has important pregnancy-related warnings and is not indicated for use in women who are or may become pregnant.
Common Side Effects
Common side effects may include:
Decreased libido
Erectile dysfunction
Ejaculation changes
Breast tenderness or enlargement
Rash
Mood changes
Testicular discomfort
Important Safety Information
Do not use finasteride if you are allergic to finasteride or any ingredient in the medication.
Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle crushed or broken finasteride tablets because finasteride may cause abnormalities of the external genitalia of a male fetus.
Tell your provider if you have liver disease, prostate cancer history, urinary symptoms, breast lumps or tenderness, nipple discharge, depression, mood changes, or fertility concerns.
Finasteride may affect prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, test results. Tell any healthcare provider ordering prostate screening that you are taking finasteride.
Contact your provider if you notice breast changes, nipple discharge, severe mood changes, allergic reaction, or persistent sexual side effects.
